Connecticut State Police announced the identification of Linda Sue Childers, one of two victims in a double homicide from December 31, 1970. The skeletal remains were found in Ledyard, Connecticut, in 1974, but remained unidentified for decades due to Childers using an unverified alias. Two men, Richard DeFreitas and Donald Brant, were arrested and convicted of the crimes, but are now deceased. Clothing and jewelry found with Childers’ remains helped in the identification process. DNA samples sent to a genetic genealogy company in 2022 led to the identification of Childers’ sister and daughter in 2024, confirming her identity. The use of forensic investigative genetic genealogy and advancements in forensic science technology played a crucial role in solving the case. The other victim was previously identified as Gustavous Lee Carmichael, a convicted serial bank robber.
